Plymouth is situated 15 miles west of Minneapolis’ downtown area in Hennepin County. The city has a population of 70,576, making it the seventh-largest city in Minnesota. Plymouth is also the third largest suburb of Minneapolis–Saint Paul, with a population of about 3.46 million people—the fifteenth largest metropolitan area in the United States.
Development of Plymouth
The first residents of Plymouth were members of the Dakota tribe and arrived around 1400-1500 AD. Plymouth rapidly developed into a town in 1855 on the northwest shores of Parkers Lake. By the end of the civil war, Plymouth had a population of 1,074, with farming as the primary source of income.
The village of Plymouth was incorporated on May 18, 1955. On August 1, 1968, it adopted the Council–Manager form of government. It became a statutory city on February 7, 1974, but returned to being a home rule charter city after voters approved a City Charter on November 3, 1992. The new Charter went into effect on January 1, 1993. The Charter not only continued the Council-Manager form of government but also increased the size of the City Council from five to seven members who would be elected from four wards.
